Thomas (Tom) A. Martin, 69, passed away after a short battle with cancer. He was a Retired Marine Corps Master Sergeant serving 26 years in the Marine Corps. He did three tours of duty in Vietnam; he received the Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, a Humanitarian Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Commendation and Meritorious Mast. He also served 20 years with the Department of Defense.

He was a compassionate, gentle man, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, uncle, and friend.

He was a civil war buff who enjoyed going to the battlefields, especially Gettysburg, PA., an avid reader; and always looked forward to going to the ocean. He was preceded in death by a grandson Robert Edward Valdez, his mother Anne (Coyne) Martin and his father Daniel Joseph Martin, Sr.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Diane of Fredericksburg, his son Edward, and his wife Lisa, of Fredericksburg; two daughters: Lisa Loy of Garrisonville, and Deborah and Wesley Basore of Gordonsville; four grandchildren: Brittany and Brandon Basore, and John and Eric Madison.

He was a loving brother to Daniel J. Martin, Jr. and his wife Lois, of Warminster, PA and his sister Lori, and her husband Joe DiDomenico of Green Lane, PA. He was ‘a mountain of quiet, gentle, strength’ to all who knew him.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 4, 2008, from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 5, 2008 at 11:30 A.M. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Stephen McGraw officiating. Burial will follow at Quantico National Cemetery.
